Kyle
and Sarah have joined the cast at Rick's, and
it's been fun watching them fit into our reality
play.
They've designed and executed a management and
inventory database I wanted. To spice up this
task they make the daily trip to the Marche Centrale
where we get our fish, meat, vegetables, fruit
and flowers. Returning to the restaurant Kyle
and Sarah help Adil, our inventory controller
(a.k.a. Inspector Cleuseau) count the heads of
lettuce, weigh the fish and meat, etc. to verify
the receipts. Kyle's running commentaries on these
aspects are just hilarious.
They've
been nice restaurant guests too - getting to know
our regular customers, and some of our "irregular"
ones as well! And it's fun to have them taste
new ingredients and menu items.they've helped
me concoct our own TeRICKiyaki Sauce, passed muster
on chicken curry, Vietnamese pho and Rick's Steak
Sauce and given me some suggestions for the menu
such as adding celery root to mashed potatoes
(yummy!). The last month we've shared the Ramadan
experience, fasting during the day and preparing
the breakfast ftour, centering on a hearty vegetable
soup called "harira."
They
sat with me while we taped the 4 debates, helped
organize the showings the following day for our
clients, helped plan our all night event November
2/3 and we consoled each other (and still do)
over the results.
I've been impressed with the way they've fit in
with the team here at Rick's, as they recognize
a unique opportunity to experience and appreciate
Moroccan culture. They're learning more of the
subtelties and perspectives a lot faster than
I did - and I notice that even though they've
been here less than 2 months, they are both a
lot more patient about getting things done that
they were at the beginning.
They've made some
friends of teachers at the American school and
through them are enjoying life outside of Rick's
- trips to the Hammam, a concert of Andalousian
music at the Cervantes Center,
a quick trip
to Marrakech. Issam introduced them to Casablanca's
infamous Derb Ghallef - a vast informal market
selling everything from electronic gear, software,
levis, antiques, furniture, plumbing and hardware
equipment and supplies (new AND used).
